Red measles can hit From Page 1 “but 75 per cent of the cases reported in this latest out- break have affected older school children in the {2 10 18 age bracket.*' As to why red measles have begun to reappear, MacBean theorized that when measle innoculation programs began some 15 years ago a wide range of vaccines were used, some weaker than others, ‘‘and it looks like some of the pro- tection is wearing off.’’ Symptons indicating red measles are similar to those associated with a bad cold: bleary eyes, runny nose and cough. ‘“‘Most importantly,"* MacBean said, ‘‘it (the il- lness) does not begin with a rash.”” Incubation period for red measles is approximately 12 days. Treatment, according to MacBean, is simple: ‘‘Sce your doctor. This is not something to be treated at home." Because red measles are so contagious and can be con- tracted by simply being in the same room as an infected person, avoiding possible in- fection requires less social interaction, which MacBean admits is difficult especially at this time of year. For those who have never had measles or who have not previously been immunized, MacBean advised immediate vaccination.
