Rebagliati was raised in a
musical family in Kelowna.
He studied piano with the
Royal Toronto Conservatory
and graduated with a degree
in General Music and a se-
cond in Education from
UBC. He received his
masters in music from the
University of Western
Washington, picking up the
awareness along the way that
it was the knowledge of
playing an instrument and
not merely the ability that
was important.

His first teaching position
on the North Shore was at
Hamilton, where he headed
the jazz program. He of-
fered concert band and
started jazz and jazz choir
bands as well as teaching
classroom guitar.

During his tenure,
Hamilton won a number of
awards in local festivals and
then achieved national ac-
claim by winning the
cherished gold medal award
at the 1976 Canadian Stage
Band Festival, the largest
and most prestigious event
of its kind in Canada.

In the fall of 1976,
Rebagliati went to Hand-
sworth to head that school’s
music program and = gave
himself three years to “really
produce some results’.

The year following — his
sucess with the class of 1979,
the junior and senior jazz
ensembles won the
sweepstake by placing first
in the New Westmins.er Jazz
Festival, the Jargest a. tena
tional festival in Canada
featuring about 1,600 s.3-
dents in competition.

Kiwanis Festival ~ including

in all aspects of rhythm
playing and is further kept
