C6 - Sunday, September 23, 1984 - North Shore News Celebrating church roo THE UNITED Church of Canada celebrates 100 years of mission, beginning with the methodist missionaries, who travelled to the far reaches of the country on saddle, foot, sled and ship. Deep Cove/Mt. Seymour United church plans to honor those early pioneers on the mission ships, who have plied the West Coast waters con- tinuously for 100 years. Captain William Oliver began it all in 1984, laun- ching the ‘Glad Tidings’, and leaving for the north coast in December of that year. This year, on Sunday, Oc- tober 7, Rev. Captain Oliver Howard will navigate the cur- rent mission vessel Thomas Crosby V to Deep Cove to help celebrate United Church roots. All North Shore residents are welcome to participate in this historical Thanksgiving Celebration. The ship will be dockingat approximately 10 a.m. on Sunday, October 7. A short Seaside Worship service will be at 11:30 a.m. This will be followed by a picnic lunch with musical entertainment throughout. Captain Howard will share his experiences travelling into the remote areas along the caast. The ’80 ship will then be open for touring.
