If there can be said to have been one star of the evening it was Joelle Rabu, the young actress who gave City Stage new life in her performance of Piaf, her Songs, her Loves and with the same show brought herself to almost instant fame. Rabu gave the audience a taste of her talents early in the evening singing Je ne Regrette Rien from’ Piaf, demonstrating the talent that won her the award = for Outstanding achievement in a musical. This award was no surprise to anyone, but even PHILIP Clarkson is pictured at work on the Amadeus costumes that won him a Jessie award By NANCY WEATHERLEY Rabu seemed amazed when she was recognized as the best young talent in theatre, Sam Payne winnint§ the award. Another surprise was that Talking Dirty writer Sher- man Snukal didn’t win for play, that award went to Nicola Cavendish, Tom Wood, and Bob Baker for the wacky comedy about an alternate North Shore Outstanding original TV _ station, Live. The big winner of the evening was Tamahnous Top Girls, a Theatre pro- duction which won best overall play, best actress (Donna White), best sup- porting actress (Brenda Robbins), and best director (Larry Lillo). Terrence Kelly was con- sidered outstanding in his performance about two men stranded while mountain climbing, K2, while that Playhouse production also won for best lighting design (Douglas Welch}. And Amadeus, the Playhouse’s most lavish production of the year won best set design (David Fischer) and best costume design (Philip Clarkson). J.
