THE NEW 1997 white-page tele
phone directories have been
showing up on doorsieps all over
the North Shore, leaving residents
with the aid phone books to
dispose of. *

Telephone directories,
tegardiess of color, can be drop-
ped otf in recycling bins located in
Safeway parking fots across the
North Shore.

This includes Someplace Special
in Caulfeild Village and Wood-
ward's Food Floor in Park Royal
North,

Telephone books can also be
taken to international Paper In-
dustries Jocated at Riverside and
Spicer.

The new phone books will be
easier to recycle next year, says
B.C. Tel, because their bindings

are made with water-soluble glue.

Omnimax
film opens

WHERE WERE you when Mount.
St. Helen’s erupted?

Probably not as close as you will
be when you re-live the event in
Ring of Fire, the new Omnimax
film being shown at Science
World.

Ring of Fire (a term used to
describe the great circle of
volcanoes and seismic activity in
the Pacific Rim) features footage of
eruptions in Navidad, Chile,
Mount Merapi in Indonesia,
Sakurajima in Japan and Mount St.
Helen’s.

Chronicled as well is the San
Francisco earthquake of 1990.

Daily showtimes are 11 a.m,
noon and 1, 2 and 4 p.m.

Saturday evening screenings are
at 7 and 8 p.m.

Blue Planet will continue its run
daily at 3 p.m. and Saturdays at 5
p.m.

WV Parks |

hosting
summer
concert
series

THE WEST Vancouver Parks and
Recreation Department is hosting
the Summer Concerts by the Sea
series for its ninth year.

The concerts will take place on
Sundays and Wednesdays at 7
p.m, at Ambfeside Plaza and
Sundays at 1:30 p.m. at Horse-
shoe Bay Plaza.

This year’s program opens with
a performance by the West Van
Pops Band on June 27. The band
will play on the pier at Ambleside
Laading at the foot of 14th Street
beginning at 7 p.m.

Following the concert the band
will board an 85-foot yacht and
play along the West Vancouver
waterfront, returning to the pier
at 10:30 p.m.

VOLUNTEERS WITH the North Shore Recycling Pro-
gram met recently to plan their Environment Week
display that ran from June 4 to 9 at Capilano Mail.

formed recycling Green Team and participating in a

THE NORTH Shore Backyard
Composting Pilot Project is enter-
ing its final stage as deliveries are
completed and compost units in-
stalled.

Members of the Going Green
team, the North Shore Recycling
Program, Compost Coordinator
Elspeth Hayter and four members
of the Envizonment Youth Corps
have worked over recent weeks to
deliver the hundreds of com-
posters ordered by local residents.

“We really appreciate the
assistance of Mike McDonaid in
the North Vancouver District
Works Yard,’ said North Shore
Recycling Coordinator Al Lynch,
“He provided us with the
equipment we needed to get the
composters delivered and the
space to storehouse them, too.”

People who purchased a com-
poster will be asked to compiete a
questionnaire once their compost
is well under way.
