WITH the minimalist "90s behind us, high society is rekindling its fondness for ’80s excess. Gold and glitter, considered garish in the pared-down ‘90s, is now back in a big way. So too are diamonds, it would seem, if we are to take our syle cues from the celebrity set. An estimated $100 million US’ worth of diamond jewelry appeared on celebrities attending the 72nd annual Academy Awards ceremony in March. The diamond fest continued at the 53rd annual International Film Festival at Cannes, which wrapped this week. Angie Everhart and Claudia Schiffer were among the celebrities dripping in diamonds. At the Academy Awards in March, Hollywood's most glamorous women stacked beautiful diamond bracelets up their arms and placed large diamonds around their necks. Top jewellers who descended upon Hollywood for the Academy Awards virtually ran out of diamond bracelets as actresses such as Cameron Diaz (Being Jolm Matkovich), Angelina Jolie (Best Supporting Actress win- ner for Girl Interrupted), Ashley Judd and Mena Suvari (American Beauty) opted for sparkle around their wrists. Large diamond necklaces were another favourite of young Hollywood actresses as Hillary Swank (Best Actress winner for Bovs Don’t Cra), Chloe Sevigny (Sovs Don’t Cry), Heather Graham (Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me) and Vanessa L. Williams, who all chose to accessorize their glamorous gowns with diamonds. Another trend seen at the 72nd Academy Awards were coloured diamonds in the form of an 81-carat intense yellow cushion-cut dia- mond pendant (valued at $9 million US) worn by supermodel Tyra Banks, white and intense pink diamonds on the ears of Salma Hayek and Julianne Moore’s yellow and white diamond drop earrings ($675,000 US) and 7.52-carat FASHION - @ Glam is back with glitter photo Diamond Information Cente HOLLYWOOD starlet Heather Graham's Academy Awards diamond bib choker from Fred Leighton totalled 50 carats. fancy vivid yellow diamond ring by Harry Winston.
