What an experience it is
to be there in the wake of
Roman galleys, Nelson and
the oil tanker Ohio, towed
home with critically needed
supplies having been aban-
doned twice and with a
German bomber crashed on
its deck.

By European standards
Malta is not expensive and
the restaurants are excellent
with good, friendly service
and lots of fresh seatood
such as sea bass and lampuki
~~ the latter caught by fish-
ermen who place palm
fronds on the water. When
lampuki stop under the
fronds for shade they are
netted.

One day [rook the ferry
over to the island of Gaza,
where the first thing f saw
was the Gleneagles Bar, and
lunched with a diver who
spoke of the growing inter-
est in war wrecks. The
waters around Malta are
stunningly clear and clean
allowing for thriving Ash
farms.

Later we drove along
quiet roads lined with olean-
der trees to a Stone Age
temple older than the pyra-
mids or Stonehenge. A small
boy sat under a tree selling
prickly pears, the fruit of a
cactus, and later in the tem
ple, carved into a huge fime-
stone slab, was “DWishart
1875." Well, maybe I’ve
been here before as well.
