Texture, pattern head the trends

EACH SEASON, textile com-
panies introduce new textures,
prints and novelty fabrics, and
some emerge as clear favorites
among the designers who set the
season’s trends.

Sew right

This fall, home sewers will proba-
bly want to update. their wardrobes
with garments made from boucles,
plaids, animal. prints and pinstripe
suitings. But knowing the curent
fashions in fabric is only half of the
picture. -The real challenge is in
understanding how different fabrics
work and choosing the right one,

Bouclé

Bouclé fabric is showing up in
vibrant color combinations and is an
exceilent:choice for fitted skirts and
softly structured jackets, For a very
up-to-date look it would also work
weil in a princess-seamed jumper.
Avoid patterns calling for gathers,
~ pleats or very fine details that would
‘be lost in this tichly textured fabric.

- ‘Animal prints

Prints are usually produced for.

‘daytime wear, but you'll find this

season's popular feline patterns int a
wide range of fabrics. Choose print-
ed cotton and rayon blends for day-
time garments; chiffon, silk and
wool or rayon crepe for evening
designs. You may also find plush
trims for a coat or jacket, and prints
that glitter with metallic dyes or
fibres for special occasion wear.
Pinstripes

Pinstripes come in a variety of
weights (and textures) of wool and
wool blend fabrics. They are fre-
quently used in tailored “menswear”
designs, but in a lightweight wool
will also make an interesting choice
for a draped, bias-cut skirt.

Plaids

You'll find plaids in everything
from soft wool or rayon blends to
suit-weight wools and bouclé fabrics.
Heavyweight or textured wool plaids
work well for casual outdoor gar-
ments and jewel-tened taffetas
(sometimes with a metallic gold or
silver thread in the plaid design) can
be used to make an evening gown.

It’s easy to be overwhelmed when
faced vith the assortment of colours,
prints and textures in your favourite
