18 — Wednesday, Octoser S, 1997 — North Shore News NV City pull Low Level bicyci By Jolanda Waskito Contributing Writer CLAPPING and cheer- ing erupted as North Vancouver City council voted Monday to aban- don the construction of the bicycle path along the Low Level Road. Council also voted 6-1 to “meet with senior governments to reallocate current grant funding to be applied against alternative bike route options for the Low Level Bicycle Corridor.” Coun. Darrell Mussatto was opposed to the motion. “This is an issue near and dear to my heart,” Mussatto said. “We did a poor job work- ing with residents. But what we're trying to do is put a bike route through. I'd like to see the Low Level bike route go along the Low Level Road. I still believe: people will use the route.” The rest of council didn’t agree. Coun. Barbara Sharp said the route was “not pracu- cal.” “I talked to avid cyclists and they said they would not use that route,” Sharp argued. “The stairs were a major deter- rent. Why put in something people won’t use?” Sharp said she preferred the option to route the bicycle path along the Third Street hill. Coun. Stella Jo Dean said the original plan was the best. “T still think the Low Level Road is still the best route,” Dean said. “But after going on the trail and listening to people, we should abandon the trail. Who says council doesn’t listen to the people?” Coun. Bob Fearnley was concemed about the cost of building a better bicycle route. He also asked whether there was any way to salvage the existing route, possibly turning it into a walking wail. The city he already spent $40,000 building the bike route, bur its progress was brought to a grinding halt on Sept. 22. Area residents complained to council that the bike path threatened neighborhood safe- ty and habitat for birds such as bald eagles. They also raised concerns about erosion and slope insta- bility. Couneil is now awaiting the approval of funding for an alternative bike route and will consider some options already put forth by city staff, includ- WIN TICKETS TO THE 147TH ANNUAL Drop your entry to the paper before Oct 14th.
