(October has been dedicated Breast Cancer Awareness month.) Women's Wear Daily, the American fashion trade paper, devoted a !6-page supplement to the subject (Breast Health: The New Era of Social Responsibility) New Yorters tumed out in force to last month s fourth annual New York Race foi the Cure in Central Park (the race was just one of 51 taking place across the country). The AVON CALLING... Avon Canada’s 55.000 independent sales dealers contributed to the largest fundraising drive in the company's history. Through the sale of the $2 Avon Flame pin to customers across Canada over the past year, $625,000 was raised for the Breast Cancer International Centre. A simi- lar program is to be launched this fall. IN THE PINK... Throughout October, beauty consultants at all Estée Lauder and Clinique cosmet- ics counters will be handing out pink ribbons to help raise public aware- ness, Estée Lauder has also intro- duced a new lipstick shade, called All-Day Pink Ribbon, with proceeds going towards breast cancer research. IN THE SPOTLIGHT... The Bay Downtown raises money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Initiative with Beauty on Stage. There will be a Makeup Marathon Oct. 15, 22 and 29, between 9:30 and 11 a.m., during which you can book an appointment with your favorite (participating) cosmetics line. On Saturday, Oct. 29, at 12:30 -and 1:30 p.m., there will be a pre- sentation of the Look Good Feel Better campaign, with makeup tips, and hat, scarf and wig demos, HAIR-RAISING COMPETI- TION.... Joico has injected a dose of reality into its second annual Hair Fantasy Competition, to be held Wednesday, Oct. 26 at Richards on Richards in Vancouver. Proceeds will be put towards breast cancer research and programs through the Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) to aid Canadian initiatives in breast cancer research, treatment and edu- cation. BODY CARE ... During the month of October, Crabtree & Evelyn will donate to the CBCF $2 from the sale of cach bath gel sold in any of the company's 33 shops across Canada. The bath and body-care retailer sug- gests using the gel in the shower or bath when performing a breast self- examination. oo When donating to the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), look for the familiar yellow daffodil, CCS* trademark of hope, on a blue back- ground with the slogan “Together we can beat cancer.” Take note that the National Cancer Fund has no connection with CCS; donations col- lected by the National Cancer Fund will not go to CCS research and pro- jects, despite any claims that may be made by this organization.
