30 - Friday, May 22, 1992 — North Shore News Drivers asked to become BC. ferries current schedule aware of motorcyclists WHEN YOU'RE riding a motorcycle, one of the greatest threats to your safety is the other vehicles sharing the road with you. That’s because about two- thirds of all motorcycle crashes involve another vehicle and, for motorcycle riders, the conse- quences of an accident are serious — three out of every four motor- cycle crashes result in injury or death. Last year alone, nearly 1,300 motorcyclists and their pas- sengers were killed or injured. A significant number of the two-vehicle crashes occur because the other driver fails to detect the motorcyclist in traffic and does ‘something to violate the cyclist’s right of way. The typical accident scenario involves another vehicle making a left-turn at an intersec- tion directly in the path of a motorcyclist, so that there is little the cyclist can do to avoid a crash. Since the return of warm weather in the spring brings legions of motorcyclists back onto the highways and roads of British Columbia, May has been desig- nated Motorcycle Awareness Month to encourage other drivers to start seeing motorcycles. There are several reasons why many other drivers fail to see motorcycles; motorists are gener- ally looking for other cars and trucks, not motorcycles; motorcy- cles have smaller profiles than other vehicles on the road, making approaching motorcyclists more difficult to see; and the smaller profile also makes it more dif- ficult for motorists to estimate the distance and speed of an oncom- ing motorcycle. : However, for most drivers, the solution is simply greater awareness of the fact that they share the road with motorcyclists. Marilyn Gullison Heel, the After all, motorcycles aren’t really that difficult to see when you ex- pect to see them. In addition, other drivers should realize that a motorcyclist’s riding pattern differs significantly from that of a car or truck. Traf- fic, weather and road conditions often require motorcyclists to res- pond differently than drivers of other vehicles, making their ac- tions more difficult to predict. Potholes, road debris, railway tracks or changes in the road sur- face can all make it necessary for the motorcyclist to suddenly change lane position. Wet road surfaces reduce motorcycle brak- ing and affect handling. Strong gusts of wind can move motor- cyclists across an entire lane. As a result, other motorists should ex- pect cyclists to make sudden changes in position and direction, and allow room in: their driving for such actions. open eyes manager of the Pacific Region of OEU, is a resident of West Van- couver.
