North Shore youths went the distance to earn their gold Duke of Edinburgh’s award. By Elizabeth Collings News Reporter These young women and men also received a handshake and good wishes from Prince Edward, a gold award achiever himself, who was recently in Vancouver to bestow the gold awards on behalf of his father, Prince Philip, who started the program. To achieve the prestigious gold award, participants must be over 16 and must meet the criteria of four separate categories — physi- cal fitness, skill, community ser- vice and expedition — over the minimum of one year. Partici- pants must also complete a ‘‘resi- dential’? component where they spene five days and nights as part of a project. “The whole emphasis of self- reliance is key to the Duke of Edinburgh program,’’ said Rocky Rocksborough-Smith of the 15th Capilano Highlander Venturer Company. He is the group area assessor for four scouts, including his son, who have achieved the bronze, silver and gold awards. “It’s entirely up to the individ- ual. It’s very much a _ self- motivated program,”’ he said. Two of the scouts, Rick Hail and David Moove, both 18, hiked the West Coast Trail over six days while retracing the trail’s history. Meanwhile, their friends Bryan Hughes and Matthew Rocksborough-Smith, both 17, took an inflatable boat journey of the Interior lakes, covering 150 kilometres over five days. Their goal vas to document the history of the paddie steamwheelers in that area around the turn of the century. The four are now members of Rovers, the senior section of tie scouting movement. Five graduates of Collingwood chose the direct entry program for participants who do not have a bronze or silver award. The min- imum ainount of time to meet the gcid award criteria for direct entry is [8 months. Juia Bauer and Azool Jeraj izaveiled last August with their leaders Richard and Sherry Wingate of Collingwood to Dominica and Barbados to repre- sent Canada at an international gold award expedition and _ resi- dential. For their residential project, the two taught at a school in a smal! town in Dominica while for their expedition, they went on a trip in a jungle. The other Collingwood con- tenders, Vanessa Richmond, Richard Swain and Nicol Tschol, went on a 50-mile, four-day field study at Strathcona Park. The gold award achievers are now eligible to join the Gold Award Society. Other North Shore gold award achievers include Catherine Broom of Sentinel Secondary; Jennifer Hall, an independent from West Vanceuver; Amiruddin Gillani and Roumina Popatia of the Ismailia Youth Group H1; and Faiz Ansari of #2573 RCACC Sixth Field Engineer Squadron of North “Vancouver. The silver awards were achieved by Greg Zweng, Colby Harder, Mitch Baker and Alysa Fairchild of #103 RCACS Thunderbird of North Vancouver; Stephen Donaidson of #525 RCACS Pathtinder of West Vancouver; and Sabrina Lee of Sentinel Sec- ondary School. AUTOMOTIVES Friday, November 8, 1991 - - North Shore News - 37 Prepare for cold weather A VEHICLE takes an abnormal amount of punishment in severe winter weather, reminds Car Care Canada of the Automotive In- dustries Association of Canada. The most noticeable symptom is slow starting, usually a result of the drastic decrease in a battery's cranking power. The engine is harder to turn over for another reason: the oil is thicker. Everything, in fact, acts stiff: the heater fan, the shock ab- sorbers and springs, the steering, the transmission, even the brakes. So just because you have the engine warmed up, don’t assume your car is rearing to go. Drive it easy for a few miles in cold weather. The following are other cold weather tips from Car Care Canada: @ Add a little extra anti-freeze solution to your windshield washer reservoir ... not the type you use in the engine, but a con- centrate available at most auto supply siores. in extreme cold, a pint of rubb- ing alcohol added to the wind- shield washer solvent will help prevent freezing. @ Do not use pure anti-frecze. The normal mixture is half water and half ethylene glycol. @ Use extreme caution when spraying starting fluid. A back fire through the carburetor or any spark can cause a fire or explo- sion. If you must use starting fluid, be sure to have a good fire extinguisher nearby. @ Remember the correct way to hook up the jumper cables: red clamps on positive (‘*hot’’) termi- nals, then one black on the nega- tive ¢‘‘ground") terminal of the good battery. The final connection should be made to the engine or frame of the disabied vehicle. This prevents a spark from occurring near a battery, which emits explosive hydrogen gas. If your engine is in tune and your battery is in good shape, you’re not likely to need a jump start. The Y382 all-season radial bites through Canadian winters and holds the road all year round.
