By Peggy Trendell-Whittaker News Reporter According to Eugene Harder, pastor of New Hope Church in Lynn Valley, it's about learning to Jove God, each other, and ourselves — preferably in a laid- back, enjoyable atmosphere. To this end, the service is sim- ple and accents uplifting music. ‘We want people to feel comfort- able, accepted and loved,”’ says Harder. ‘*‘We bend over backwards so newcomers don’t feel conspicuous.”* Formal titles are declined. Said Harder, ‘‘At New Hope I’m called by the same name my mother called me to supper with.’? The atmosphere is anything but judgmental: ‘“‘We think it’s very important to accept people as they are. They don’t have to change for our benefit,” he added. As he believes that same-sex counsellors are usually of more venefit, he hopes the church will one day be able to afford a female pastcr to join him in his work. While the church is financially independent, it is a member of the Mennonite Central Committee and was originally sponsored by the Mennonite Brethren.
