cean voyages are supposed to calm the nerves, but
relaxation isn’t quite what the Ingrams find. Not by

a long shot.

A recent tragedy finds John
(Sam Neill) and his young wife Rae
(Nicole Kidman) trying to put their
life back together in the eerie,
calm waters around the Great Bar-
rier Reef. However, the trenquil
environment isn’t enough to help
Rae shake her recurring nightmare
when another one looms on the
horizon.

A crippled schooner appears in
the distance. Rowing furiously
from the vessel towards them, is
the only survivor. American
Hughie Warriner (Billy Zane) spills

out his story of a fatal botulism
outbreak on a pleasure cruise sev-
eral days earlier. When veteran
sailor John sees more than a few
leaks in the yarn, he decides to
investigate the ship alone.

On board the Orpheus, his
worst suspicions are confirmed
and he is forced to watch helpless-
ly as his yacht sails away with Rae
and Hughie struggling at the helm.

resourcetul, a nice change for the
usual object of jeopardy, the fe-
male character. For Rae, this tuna-
tic actually serves in her healing
process, taking her from fragile
and injured to a fierce survivor.
Gorgeous Nicole Kidman makes a
memorable debut in the role.

Graeme Revell’s nerve-rattling
score features heavy breathing,
Latin and Aboriginal rhythms and
makes Dead Calm anything but.

Ruth Patchett (Roseanne Barr) is
a clumsy, obese mother lumbered
with severe marital problems,
namely her husband Bob (Ed

Begley, Jr.). His latest fling is with
romance novelist Mary Fisher
(Meryl Streep) and when he leaves
Ruth for his pink and purple prose
writer, there’s the devil to pay.

It sounds promising, but the
comedy is not only leaden and
ham-fisted, but lacks the novel’s
dark finish. Only Streep has a
couple of laughs as her prissy
world crumbles about her.
