Summer heat brings out the roaches

BIG CITY living in the heat of the
summer usually inspires fantasies
of cottage holidays by a cool lake.

But one urban dweller can’t wait
for a hot, sticky summer in the city
— the cockroach.

The roach thrives for most of
the year in the warmth and humid-
ity found behind the walls of city
buildings — most notably apart-
ment buildings. During a. hot
summer, however, these ideal liv-
ing conditions are duplicated ev-
erywhere, broadening the roach’s
range of travel significantly.

Kenn Lalonde, director of mar-
keting for an extermination system
manufacturer says: ‘‘Someone

with an infestation problem is
more likely to see roaches during
the summer. Roaches tend to
spread out more at this time of
year and are transported more
from place to place.”’

The apartment kitchen is the
ideal environment for a flourishing
roach population. “It’s the
presence of food in kitchens that
mekes city apartments their
favorite home,’’ says en-
tomologist, Dr. Ted Shapas. He
estimates that in major urban cen-
tres like Toronto, Vancouver and
Montreal, a minimum of 45 per
cent of multi-unit buildings experi-
ence some degree of infestation.

The cockroach is indeed a sur-
