in sunny San Diego

I’M NOT going to repeat myself —- I did a column on San
Diego last December, but I’d like to remind you that during
January and February each year, the city offers special dis-
counts to Canadians — they call it ‘‘Maple Leaf Months.”’

This includes 20 per cent mini-
mum discount at over 100 hotels
and motels, discounted tours,
cruises, entry fees and restaurants
{not very many!).

Don’t forget to check your Solid
Gold or Entertainment books for
travel deals — I’ve got two San

both offering 50 per cent discounts
—- valid anytime.

San Diego is an excellent winter
destination for people like me — 1
don’t like extreme heat, stay out of
the sun and get bored easily.

It’s not easy to get bored in San
Diego and, if all else fails, it’s just
a quick hop over the border to
Mexico on public transportation,

One of the things that amazed
me the most about San Diego is
the airport! It’s right in the centre

of town, and I'll swear that the
glide-path for landing is right
down the main street.

A word of advice for choosing a
flight time for arriving or leaving
San Diego in the winter months —
the airport often gets fogged-in in
the mid-to-late afternoon.

How do I know? Because the
last time I was there — December
1987 — my 3 p.m. flight turned in-
to a6 p.m. bus.

Some, I’m told, do a good job
while others belong in Scam City.

The most important bits of ad-
vice: Never give your credit card
number over the phone, never do
business by mail until you've
checked the company thoroughly
and get full details — including
any extra charges and names of
airlines, hotels, etc. — in writing.

You can practically smell the salt air and feet
the roll of the waves when you read the
works of Douglas Reeman and Alexander
Kent. I've read most of HIS book~
AK) so when | received a heartwarming
letter (rom Kim Reeman, the wife of this
British sea novelist, | was thrilled!
