Doug Collins ® get this straight @ A DOUBLE helping of farce is being served up in the Canadian concept of the Kurt Waldheim affair. Sometime this year, for instance. Brian Baloney & Co. will be shaking hands with Oliver Tambo, head of the terrorist: African National Congress. But the president of Austria, against whom nothing has been proved, is persona non grata. Waldheim has never said he wished to visit these pure and sacred shores, but Baloney told him he was not welcome anyway. I's a lovely examole of trying to win friends by bashing the non- existent Nazi menace or announc- ing that a guy's a ‘war criminal’. In this bogus morality play, the latest bit of farce is that right across the continent and of course in our copy-cat local dailies, heads have been shaken and eyes have rolled over Pope Paul John's hav- ing grasped the hand of an un- touchable. But the Pope has a bet- ter knowledge of protocol than our nincompoops in Ottawa do. He may also know more about the facts of the case, the Vatican hav- ing a first-class intelligence ser- vice. So Waldheim’s reception there could be a signal that the Austrian isn't quite as bad as he’s been painted. Not having kept company with Waldheim during the war, I do not know whether he was involved in war crimes. All | can say is that the evidence against him is us flimsy as an old-fashioned lady’s lace handkerchief. There is a picture of Lt. Waldheim standing next to a Ger- man general who was later ex- ecuted, and there have been plenty of hysterical accusations. Once the doys have been Jet loose on a “Nazi” loud barking is automatic. One thing I know for sure is that a lieutenant in the German Army was a nobody. There were tens of thousands of them and they had no say in operations ex- cept at the platoon or company level. Yet Waldheim is now said to have been a planner of evil intent. Some junior officers were even photographed with Hitler himself. But that does not make them war criminals. Furthermore, it is beyond belief that a guy could be Secretary General of the United Nations for 12 years without be- ing nailed by his, present accusers -- if there was anything to nail him for. This whole business started with the socialist media in Austria itself. The ‘‘tell-tale picture’’ was flashed around the world, and fev presto we had a new series of ex- citing headlines. And yes, it is true that Waldheim didn't seem to know where he was during the war, But so what? Neither did [at times. Let us assume, though, that the man was involved in things that good Boy Scouts don't do. Why pick on him? Murder and mayhem are a fact of interna- tional politics. A few years ago, for instance, a conspicuous killer was in Canada on a fund-raising tour. And nobody said boo. ft mean Menachem Begin, who rose from the ranks of terrorism to become prime minister of Isracl. He was the leader of the Irgun, which with the Stern Gang was the most ruthless of Jewish terror groups. \n 1948, Begin organized and personally directed the massacre at Deir Yassin of 254 Arabs -- old men, women and children. And that is truth, not rumor. The idea was to frighten Arabs into leaving what was about to become Israel. It succeeded, hence the present Arab refugee problem. Later, he bombed Lebanon to bits. But Begin is OK and is now in ‘honorable retirement’. When the man dies, Baloney will put on his most pious voice and express deep sorrow. The Tambo visit, meanwhile, } will be right in line with our perpetual devotion to the double standard. Denis Goldberg was recently here on a lecture tour, for instance. An ANC terrorist who was sentenced to life imprison- ment, he had no trouble at all in visiting Ottawa after his release { from a South African jail. On the contrary, his tour was funded in part by the Canadian taxpayer. Nelson Mandela, another com- mic also jailed for terrorism, would get a hero’s welcome here. Joe Clark would be at the airport | to pump his hand. Winnie Mandela, that sweet little woman who loves ‘‘necklacing'’, would be greeted by ecstatic lefties. But a Waldheim against whom no proof exists is an unmentionable, just like dirty underpants. Waldheim is on the chopping block because the Holocaust In- dustry has selected him as a useful target, with Edgar Bronfman of the American Jewish Congress leading the pack out of New f York. And that’s the way it is. W/V legacy project well off the ground From page 8 But West Vancouver director of Parks and Recreation Frank Kurucz said the legacy project is well of f the ground. Kurucz said the total cost of the performing arts stage and garden slated for Ambleside Park has been pared down from an inittal $680,000 to $500,000. “The project is in a go-ahead position and right now the process is to raise the rest of the funds EAT WEL, WE WEL through private fund raising,”’ said Kurucz. a crime alert ween. _ THI FOLLOWING is a dist of re: cent North Share crimes: WEST VANCOUVER Thelt from auto 4AO00 block kose Crescent.
