Second clioice are the op- timistic ones, when it is given to us to understand that old age is not just a summons which sends us shuffling off into the wings, but that it calls up all our rich experience and observation to reward us with a better life. This is one of those, thanks to that bunch of experts I told you about, the Geriatric Sub-Committee which is trying to coordinate all the local tal- ent and excellence that will provide a complete battery of tools plus the people to wield them. All this on our behalf, To get going, they had each at the previous meeting charg- ed themselves with creating a “wish fist.’? This wish list would spell out for all of us what the committee sees as its parameters and intentions. You’d have been as im- pressed-as I was. Not that the lists were so long or so dazzl- ing in scope, but that they were so practical and ‘so workable and so cheap and so thoughtful. They each have a list of priorities, of course, for their separate targets, but they had additional help from_ the first-ever complete list of just what sort of aid is right now available to North and West Vancouver seniors. Would you believe: close to . 70 agencies to deal with. the . comfort and resuscitation of the disabled, the ill, either chronica!ly or temporarily, the lonely, the’ confused and as well the hale and conscientious . seekers after truth? An especially sensitive wish, 1 thought, came from Jim, himself a support worker, hoping to see night help avail- able, when the ill and lonely need to make a_ connection with the world. He had another, too — that caregivers might look for even- ing and weckend leave occa- sionally, in addition to day times. An ‘interesting projection came from Pat, wanting to in- volve the everyday community in the identification of people needing help but ignorant of how to get it. Or people un- aware that they have changed and without companions to alert them. She suggested hairdressers, bank tellers, garage attendants, post and paper carriers as observers of physical or mental aberration’ who could be en- couraged to ‘keep an eye out,” without a spying con- notation. A word to a_ designated authority might save a lot of grief. The whole thrust of these wishes seemed to me tc spell, simply, the need for expanded education of you and me.
