The 17-year-old West Van-
couver resident and former
North Shore News carrier
swam away with two gold
and one bronze medal from
the Mexico Canada Invita-
tional Swim Meet.

The meet, held Mav 18 to
20 at New Westminster's
Canada Games Poot, at-
tracted 535 swimmers from
38 international swim clubs
including Canadian,
American and, for the first
time since the 1976 Montreal
Olympics, the Mexican na-
lional swim club.

Hyland began swimming
as a young boy in the Philip-
pines where his family had
moved in the early 1970s.
When they returned to North
Vancouver in 1675, his
mother says she wara!ted fan
in swimming clay....- how

tropical allergies: ‘‘When we
arrived in North Vancouver
from the Philippines, Ian suf-
fered badly from allergies.
Swimming, | was toid, would
help. He took to the poul like
a duck to water, and his
allergies have been under
control, for the most part,
ever since.”

itially tried her son in straight
swim classes, but his energy,
always boiling aver, required
a more stimulating outlet. In-
stead, she enrulled hint first
in the Lions Gate Swim Club,
which, with three other
North Shore swim clubs,
became the Chena Swim
Club in 1980, then in the
West Vancouver Oulers when
the family moved to West
Vancouver in 1980.

Though he says North
Shore Swim clubs, particular-
ly Chena, have excellent pro-
grams, Hylard felt that his
abilities and .,.bitions went
beyond the scape of any of-
fered on the North Shore.

In September 1984, he
joined New Westminster’s
Hyack Swim Club whose
coaching ranks had been
bolstered by internationally
renowned swim instructors,
Graham Smith and Bill
Sawchuck, both members of
Canada's 1980 Olympic swim
team. Since joining the
Hyacks in fall of 1984, the
two have moved the
105-member swim club from
lith to seventh in national
Canadian swim rankings.
