’ A7 - Wednesday, March 30, 1983 - North Shore News @ mailbox XA Mayor seeks end to controversy Dear Editor: There are a few matters that have recently caused public concern that deserve some clarification. Fountain: A generous surprise offer designed and sited by a renowned ar- chitect was made to the municipality. The size, finish and proportion is not that which the newspaper reproduction showed. All aspects of this offer are presently under quiet study by competent advisors and Lay off top paid first Dear Editor: Regarding the recent demotions and layoffs of City outside workers and who were on the the low end of the wage scale. As a longtime taxpayer in the City of North Vancouver I fail to understand why there has been no demotions or layoffs among the high paid salaried staff who. because of the recent layoffs. cannot have the same amount of supervisory work to do. The outside staff has been reduced considerably over the last few months but no layoffs of City hall staff. If City council in their wisdom are trying to save money, why are they starting at the wrong end of the totem pole? With regard to Ald. Sorensen’s remark, “They are lucky to have a job.” The majority of these outside workers chose the City of North Vancouver as their employer. hoping when it came time to retire they could do so with dignity. Chnstine O’Connor North Vancouver Join the BUCKLE UP B:igade Seat belts save tives no decisions have been made. Ambleside Park: The overdue removal of the dangerous road crossing of B.C. Rail in the centre of the park made the parallel road to the Pitch & Putt and dog walk necessary. This showed that the west entrance parking lot could be drained and laid out better. The Park planning staff bad a plan for Ambleside Park which showed the advantages and disadvantages of the present Psychiatry depressing Dear Editor: During the last few years I have been a patient at Lions Gate Hospital numerous tumes. Each time I was very impressed with the modern and efficient decor, equipment and attitude of all the staff. The comfort of both the patient and the professional was always a priority in any department I was taken to. I find it difficult to un- derstand why one depart- ment was totally forgotten in all the modernization that was recently done. Psychiatry, housed in the “Activation Building”, is a stark old place desperately needing a face lift. I congratulate the staff who, day after day, work in such dingy surroundings. Roads are not normal through park play areas but this road existed from the time the area was a slough and a big dump and was used to reclaim the land. The plan is being examined in whole and in part, and no decisions have been made. Money will materially influence any thinking together with the potential increase in playing and parking areas. Public thinking will be sought out if any proposals germinate. Neighbourhood Pubs: The provincial government authorized and _ regulated these in 1975. The then West Vancouver councu adopted without any survey a policy of receiving applications in three only areas, including Dundarave. Applications to date have been varied in the area surveyed and in many important factors. Any pub, if approved, would likely operate over very many years ahead . In order to gain full public opinion on the present general policy, a survey can be taken between 22nd Street and 29th Street Upper Levels Highway as soon as possible. Matters such as these, sometimes with partial facts and necessarily short head- lines in papers inevitably cause concern among residents. Information on any matter is always available from my office. Derisive or adversary at- titudes are to be avoided in West Vancouver if at all possible. Our life style is too precious for antagonistic controversy. Derrick Humphreys, Mayor Dept. at LGH surroundings could make a healthy person depressed. One psychiatrist I spoke to tells me he has been refused financial help twice. I know a recession is on, and money ts tight, we must all make our sacrifice! Yet, almost daily we read about government spending on things a lot more frivolous than mental health. Next time a visitor is given a guided tour through Lions Gate Hospital, why not include the “Activation Building”?
