Though he said he would prefer a covered facility, he told council “‘if you're willing to build a pool then we're willing to get out and break our backs to cover it” . But City aldermen disagreed with Smith on the necessity for a 50 metre pool at Mahon. Aldermen Frank Marcino and Bill Sorenson told Smith they were looking more “for a fun type pool.” Building a 50 metre pool which would be used for swim meets would be defeating that purpose, said Marcino. Gary Young from the Rec Commission also disagreed with the idea of a 50 metre pool at Mahon. “We're very unclear about the need for more com- petitive pools,” he said. However Young rejected the idea of repairing Mahon, and instead called for the constraction of a new indoor pool closer to the heart of North Vancouver City. Mahon Pool is the wrong shape, he said. “The shallow end is too deep to teach litle kids how to swim and the deep end is not deepsenough to teach diving.” Mahon isn't used cnough to justify spending $450,000 on repairs, he added By cutting cost, a new wave action pool, complicte During the The Microton Racing Team was back on the track _ at Seattle International | wet On the Jast lap. eve etyone went to make his move. Such a pool would attract people from outside the community, thus generating more revenue, he said. However Young cautioned that he wasn’t speaking as executive director of the Rec Com- mission, since the com- mission hasn't formally looked atthe issue yet. City aldermen remained unconvinced of the need for a new pool however. Alderman Elko Kroon suggested North Van- couver’s three indoor pools weren't presently being used to their full capacity and Marcino told Young “the desire is for a fun pool, not for something for people to come in from Surrey or whatever.” “Let's have a pool for the kids,” he said. Kroon and Marcino noted that Smith and Young seemed to have conflicting ideas on what was needed. Council decided to postpone any decision on Mahon’s fate until the public has had some input into the future of the 32 year old pool. cl LICK BUCKLE UP! postal strike Voluntary Subscribers are invited to come in to the NE WS offices and make payments tn person Invotoes for Classified and Display advertising can also be paid in per sm Your co-operation durtng the strike ts qreatly appreciated 1139 Lonedale Ave., 2nd floor 9 am-9 pm, Monday to Friday 9 am-5 pm, Saturday Perhecert }edesereerkemckuntechaemtananadl sunday north shore news be at Portland: Interifational Raceway July 12 and 43. 0° LANGFORD * TAKES.
