‘Page 56, November 22, 1978 - Desperate Men. — In, a world. being. forced 7 into _triviality and superfic- iality by an ever-increasing **people’’ mentality, garet is Canada’s darling (variously) or pain in the rear-end (to many), sitting behind an easel on the shore, - ' painting a self-portrait with the waves drowning every- one else a ‘background. If the Canadian publishing industry suffers any major setbacks, it won’t necessarily be Mrs. Trudeau’s fault, but she didn’t help much at that. The hardcover edition is . being manufactured in Tor- onto because of lower Canadian production costs due to the discounted dollar. But the book will sell. for $10.95 in the United States, while it is $12.95 here. Paddington is distributing the book in Britain, while Grosset and Dunlap will handle distribution in the U.S. Canadian publishers have been left out of Ithe scene altogether. Several Canadian firms put forward bids, but Paddington appar- ently had obligations to New York-based Random House which handles all of Pad-- dington’s Canadian dist- ribution rights. The book will not appear in paperback before 1980, adding further to the wocs of the little people caught up in . the throes of personality worship or detestation: having to shell out big bucks for the hardcover privilege of admiring or hating a star. jorth Shore News _ Mar- — - MARGARET DURING FILMING of Kings. and The publisher, Paddington oe Press of London, England, ‘says the book’s publication is" being timed to coincide just prior to the next federal election. _ If Margaret writes the way. she acts on the screen, she — will hardly be a threat to professional writers. A rec- ent screening of a short clip. from her latest film, The Guardian Angel, on a public . affairs program, revealed ._that her dramatic abilities are hardly abundant. Yet the ‘‘estranged"’ wife “of the Prime Minister is often a target of vindicism, mostly from individuals who feel threatened by her, mostly professionals who do not like her free access to unlimited apportunity despite a seem- ingly complete lack of talent. But say the publishers, it doesn’t matter that Maggie might not posess that much talent. It’s what she has to say that is going to count, not how she says it. ‘*Let’s not forget,’’ says John Marquee of Paddington Press, ‘‘that this is the first time in recent history that a woman has left a_ ruling figure... a woman who has had private discussions with Castro, Prince Charles, ‘Sadat, the Shah of Iran, and ‘similar heads of state.”’ “There is no doubt that people will want to read what she says."’ And Smile B “* Mike Course & Bob Young - the nuttiest Englishmen on “Alderman Elect Tee says — a THANK You! residents of North Vancouver District for your support. | look forward to serving you.
