Norwester McLaren qualifies for cross country int’l meet NORWESTER LINDSAY McLeren has qualified to repre- sent Canada at the World Junior Cross Country Championships to be held February in Boston. McLaren, who has shone as a newcomer to Simon Fraser Uni- versity athletics this year, will form part of the six-member women’s team from Canada. She qualified for the world championship with a second place finish at the Canadian junior cross country championships held in Halifax, Nova Scotia. McLaren posted a time of 15 minutes, 13 seconds in the 4,000-metre event (four kilometres). . The B.C. cross-country team placed second overali in Halifax and included NorWesters Suzanne LeNobel and Gillian Walker who finished 21st and 39th respectively in the 4,000. Two other NorWesters, Lori 1992 TOYOTA PREVIA Automatic, 7 passenger $411/month 48 months Durward and Anne Drewa, finished second and fifth respec- tively at the B.C. championships but chose to miss the Canadian championships to give the younger athletes a chance to compete. Durward and Drewa become seniors as of Jan. 1 and would not be eligible to compete at the world junior championship. They both run for the University of B.C. Another NorWesier athlete, Warren Barker, is a strong hope- ful for the senior national cross country team. Barker placed seventh at the Canadian championships in Halifax, just ahead of Graham Fel}. Six athletes were chosen to the Canadian team going to the World Senior Cross Country Championships in Boston; three more will be selected after a Feb. 1 meet in Victoria. 1992 PLYMOUTH VOYAGER Automatic, 7 passenger $359/month 48 months Badminton team nets Pan Am medals STEPPING UP to their first in- ternational level competition, three members of Hollyburn Country Club’s badminton team were the only players from Canada to participate in the 199] Pan American Junior Badminton Championships held in Mexico City recently. Nancy Reid, 15, Allison Rice, and Christy Wilson, both 16, travelled with Hollyburn pro Zip Dhanani to compete at the cham- pionships in the Juan de la Bar- rera Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 10,000. On the carpeted courts in Mex- ico, the Canadian girls managed victories which sent them home with two medals each. Reid, playing under-16 singles, 100’s of Stocking Stuffers captured the gold medal by defeating Monica Rossil of Guatemala 11-5, 11-1 in the semi-final, and winning the final against Mexican Laura Amaya 11-S, i!-3. She partnered with teammate Rice in the under-18 doubies to earn a gold medal by defeating the Peruvian team of Ursula Blanco and P. Pedericci 15-11, 15-11 in the semi-final, and Zvetlana and Karla Serralde from Mexico, 15-5, 15-3 in the final. Rice won her other medal in the under-18 girls’ singles event, ad- vancing to the finals by defeating Blanco 12-10, !t-7, and capturing the title by upsetting Zvetlana Serralde 11-4, 11-8. Wilson, also playing under-18, brought home the silver medal in GLOVES 4 Christmas Specials jon Tennis Racquets mixed doubles partnered with M. Gutierrez of Guatemala, beating the number one team from Guatemala in the semis, but losing in the finals to a Mexican duo. Playing with Mercedes Pierola of Guatemala, Wilsoa’s second medal, a bronze, was won in under-18 girls’ doubles. At the national level, all three girls competed in the junior championships for the first time last year. Rice won the under-16 singles title to become national champion in that event, while Reid made it to the quarter-finals. Rice must now play under-18, and Reid is currently ranked among the top four under-i6 girls’ singles players in the country.
