By JOANNE MacDONALD A LAST minute decision to switch fishing holes meant the difference between life and death for a 67-year-old Burnaby man at Alice Lake Wednesday. Frank Audia and his son Sal were fishing on the Audia fell through the ice. The quick reaction of North Vancouver fishermen Peter Weiss, 25, and Doug Schwery, 25, — who had ar- rived at the lake only minutes carlier from a disappointing steelhead ses- sion at the Cheakamus River ~— saved Audia’s life. Weiss said the pair had only had their lines out for noticed Audia fall through about 30 feet from shore. “We ran all the way to the other side, and | managed to find a smail branch that we could reach out to him. | walked out as far as possible on the lag, then started crawling along the ice. Doug passed me a longer branch, which the guy managed to hold onto, plus he got sup- the ice started breaking all around us because of all our weight. Doug fell into the water but | only pot the bot- tom part of my body wer because I ended up straddl- ing the log,"’ said Weiss. He said the pair had a momentary scare during the rescue, when it appeared as though Audia had broken his leg in the mishap. But 13 - Sunday, March 24, 1985 - North Shore News Two local men perform icy rescue yanked the man out of the water that he had an artifical leg. “Our biggest worry was that he’d lose his grip before we got there. It took us about 10 minutes to run across to the other side and grab a branch to help him,” said Weiss. Schwery told the North Shore News Audia's son had attempted to assist in the rescue, but was advised by the two young men to stay on shore. He said he was relatively calm during the rescuc, crediting the pair's reaction to fishing experi- ence and common sense. Added Weiss: ‘“‘Everyone’s making a big deal out of this.
