N. Van track fields considered unsafe NORTH VANCOUVER City Council has agreed to look into the state of North Shore track facilities after receiving an angry letter from the president of the NorWesters Track and Field Club. “There are no safe training fa- cilities on the North Shore to enable athletes and recreational runners to train in safety and rela- tive comfort,”’ said Dawn Copping in her letter. Copping said that ‘‘during the fall/winter season, NorWesters are forced to utilize such bizarre train- ing locations as the Park Royal parking lot and dark sidelines of the soccer field at Ambleside.” Copping said the North Shore is the only major municipality in Greater Vancouver that does not have acceptable track and field fa- cilities. “We find the lack of action over the 20-plus years that NorWesters members have been lobbying for a respectable track facility, totally unacceptable. We would not be in the crisis position that faces us now if action had been taken in earlier years,’’ said Copping. Mayor Jack Loucks agreed with Copping’s concern about the state of the tracks. ‘“‘There has been no move from the other municipalities (to build or upgrade tracks),” he said. But Ald. Rod Clark called the letter alarmist, saying the situation was already ‘‘well in hand.’’ “This is the typical case of biting the hand that feeds you. In my experience that’s not any way to get things done.” he said. But Loucks said although the letter was ‘‘not the most diplomat- ic,” he felt it probably showed the president’s true feelings. City engineer Chuck Gale pointed out that the dangerous tracks referred to by Copping are not within the boundaries of the city. vue FOR PROFESSIONAL REAL ESTATE SERVICES CALL 4 GRANT BOTTO | ESSE es: mi : 12 - Sunday, March 25, 1990 - North Shore News Cae re.
