NORTH VAN WOMAN SHOT

Verdict out on highway murder

THE DEATH of a North Van-
couver woman, who was shot and
killed on a Squamish Highway
roadside June 14, has been found
to be a homicide by a person or
persons unknown.

ing an inquiry into the death of
Toni Gail Engel, 28, who was pro-
nounced dead at Squamish General
Hospital 90 minutes after being
shot as she sat in the passenger’s
seat of a pickup truck.

During the inquest, the jury was
told that Engel was brought to the
hospital by her 30-year-old com-
mon-law husband Oliver Plunkett.

person as the two sat in his.truck.

Plunkett, who said he was in-
volved in the illegal trade of drugs
and guns and felt he was a target,
leaped to his death from the Lions
Gate Bridge a week after the death
of his wife.

highway's shoulder, Plunkett said
the car pulled up behind him. A
man got out of the car, he said,
walked to the passenger side of the
truck and fired a single shot, which
struck his wife.

An RCMP spokesman has said
the investigation into Engel’s death
is still continuing.
