10 - Sunday, May 23, 1999 — Dear Editor: Following the preliminary watershed report of August 1991 the Greater Vancouver Water District has now brought out the final results of an ongoing study of the present condition of the three watersheds that supply us with our residential: and industrial water. A raost: thorough investi- gation by some of the top North Shore News experts on the continent, this cuniders the future “snd does not rule out the use of con- trolled logging as a means of maintaining a well-balanced environment for a healthy watershed. This opinion is not sup- ported by many of the elect: ed niembers of the North Shore councils nor by the so- called Friends of the Kids shouldn’t be on Dear Editor: The May 7 News front page photo shows two preschoolers on a picket line. T hope that the photo was posed for. If nor, the parents should be charged with child abuse. Everyone knows that strikes can be violent and I have seen a lor of picket line violence. On May Y under the edi- torial page’s “You Said I” column, North Vancouver RCMP Const. Tom Seaman is gtoted as saying, “Solving problems with violence usu- ally brings on more vio- lence.” It’s obvious that the U.S., north shore news MAIL Box Wondering about water works Reader troubled by plan Watersheds, not oone of whont has a scientific back- ground ino any of the disci- plines that apply in this com- plicated field. Bob Huen North Vancouver Men are victims of violence too Dear Editor: Lwould like to commend you on one of your columns, “Acts of violence are not exclusive to men” written by Hana Mercer on May 7 I wish more women would realize that men are not all wicked and bad. I agreed with so many things thar Ms. Mercer Wrote. I feel that the pendulum has switched and is too one- sided. I feel very sorry for clean- when are often “taken to the ers” after a divorce, women not only take most of their possessions, but also their pride. Jill Bailey West Vancouver fo use { Dear Editor: Re: May 16 News article “Ramp to Bridge Gap.” I was surprised to learn that a temporary Bailey Bridge will be suspended over the Firs Narrows cross- ing while the Lions Gate Bridge deck will be removed and refitted. What concerns me mast is the shear length of the Bailey Bridge and the fact that because the bridge is dis- missed as temporary, insuffi- cient attention may be upon its structural integrity and the temporary bridge may not be up to standards. A Bailey Bridge that long, which has never been built before, raises serious safety concerns. Our region of the world is infamous for its bridge- building disasters. I strongly fear to see something on the scale of the Tacoma Narrows or the Tronworke Memorial Kridge ( ond Narrows Bridge) Disaster happen. I would hate to see the Lions Gate Bridge to be renamed as another Tronworker’s Memorial Bridge because of inex ence in building and eng recring long Bailey Bridg British Columbia, through its mining history and its large resource-driven economy, has far greater experience in building run- nels than with = building disaster bridge Our, history with cunnel- building dates back to the coal-mining Nanaimo, where a network of tunnels was built under Georgia Strait, and Britannia days of pmporary bridge Beach's network of tunnels in the then-largest. copper- mine in the British Empire. Even today many ‘nines have experts in’ tunnelling ands their used equipment can be used to build a cheap, safe runnel for the first nar- rows crossing. One of the most recent British Columbia tunnelling megaprojects was in’ the building of a hydroelectric dam for Alcan Aluininum’s Kemano Completion Project. Perhaps the equipment and experts used in that pro- ct and other recently closed ould be used to build ‘ yet cost-effective cun- nel under the First Narrows.
