Block party celebrates
East Kings community

THE 300-block of East
Kings Road in North
Vancouver is a special
place to live.

And for that, resident Paul
Hovan gives credit to five
longtime neighbours.

“Having these people living
on our street has made this a
better place to live and raise
our families,” said Hovan, a
resident of East Kings for 17
years.

On March 27, Hovan and
his wife Linda organized a
block party to celebrate the
enduring contribution to their
neighbourhood of the street's
five senior residents — Mona
Bryant, Jim and — Joyee
Macfarlane, and Charlie and
Kaye Miller. All five have lived
in the neighbourhood for 45
or more years.

Hovan, 49, said the block
party was a way to introduce
the street’s newest residents to
its oldest. Neighbours aged six
to 90, representing each of the
10 homes on the block,
showed up for the afternoon
barbecue,

Guest of honour Bryant, a
great-grandmother and the
Hovans’ next-door neighbour,
said she thought the block
party was a “wonderful idea.”
She defined East Kings as “the
sort of a neighbourhood that

lets you be yourself (with) no
interference (trom neighbours)
but they’re always there when
you need help.”

Hovan agreed that the
neighbours all watch out for
each other and especially for

the street’s elderly residents.

He challenged other com-
munities to organize block par-
ties of their own to “acknowl-
edge some of the people who
have been in a neighbourhood
for a long time.”
