THE North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce is opposed to future tolls for Lions Gate Bridge. Said past chairman Stuart McLaughlin: _ “The chamber first pave notice to the provin- cial government of its position on tolls in May of 1994. It is important that we now have agreement and support of the three North Shore: municipalities’ ‘and that we are all speaking as one voice.” He said. that any additional . barrier to moving people over the bridge will have a negative impact on North Shore businesses. “The premise the government has taken that there is a free alternative — the Second Narrows — is false. The tourists coming to the North Shore, they don’t know about the Second Narrows bridge. They only’ know about the one we promote, the Lions Gate Bridge,” - McLaughlin said As president of Grouse Mountain, McLaughlin knows directly of the impedi- ments already posed by bridges. “There are six to eight million tourists coming to Vancouver and yet we’re only getting a mil- lion and ‘a half to two million here on the North Shore. “The bridge isa barrier. If we make that barrier even stronger, then even fewer people will get here.” More than 800,000 visitors make the: ps _ to Grouse Mountain annually — 60% of thems come over the Lions Gate.” Bridge McLaughlin estimates traffic to the “mountains, § alone will contribute approximately $2 : lion in tolls cach year.’ : He said Grouse could lose as much ‘as $i million annually if the bridge is tolled. oot - Michael Bei EATON'S HOME.
