WEST Vancouver coun-
cil endorsed a staff rec-
ommendaticn on
Monday to focus on
buiiding a community
centre in the western part
of the municipality.

The long-awaited facility
could cost $2 miilion more
than the originally anticipat-
ed $4.5 million, said munici-
pal staff.

The western — facility.
which will be built on one
side of Marine Drive near
Gleneagies golf course,
received the nod over a cen-
tral facility at 22nd Street.
Staff recommended that a

new 50,000- square-foot
(4.645 sq. m), $10.5-million
facility at the 22nd Strcet site
should replace the aging
existing centre.

The new figures for the
central facility are also above
previous estimates.

Staff blamed the increased
costs for both facilities on the
planning process, which has
included landscaping, site

services, parking, develop-
ment cost charges and pro-
fessional fees not included in
the original estimates.

Staff said the increased
costs need to be reviewed to
cetermine if there is enough
money to build the proiccts.

At) Monday's — council
meeting, parks and recreation
director Kevin Pike said
there are only enough funds

to build the western centre in
the short-term.

Council approved
$65,000 for phase two of the
planning process.

Over the next two months,
the funds will help provide
detailed site information and
information on options and
various funding levels for
both sites.
