Jazz came into her life when she attended Handsworth secondary schcol. “I realiy must give great credit to the music director who is still there, Bob Rebagliati. “I didn’t hear jazz ai home or on the radio. Bob, or Reb as we affectionately called him, he was very instrumental in getting a lot of kids into the music. He introduced me toa whole bunch of styles of jazz when I was starting. I can’t give him enough credit because | now know how iniportant that is,” she said. Rebagliati has this to say about his star graduate of 1979; “She has perfect pitch and she also played violin very well. Anything i showed her on the piano she had right away. “I think she’s fabulous. She’s built a solid and honest career on talent.” The latest disc from Rosnes contains some person- ally profound musical stories. During a three-month peri- od in 1994 she first met Mohindar, her biological mother, and she lost her adop- tive mother, Audrey, to cancer. “It was a pretty emotional time with very high highs and low lows in there. It felt very natural to try and let some of those feelings come out in the music.’ . Rosnes has yet tos see how the discovery of her Indian cultural heritage will influence. . her and, by extension, her - music. “I've always been a fan of world music. f'm 100% Indian, which was such a shock to me given my skin color.” Ancestors shows off well Rosnes’ immense skill at the piano as well as her strong compositional ability.
