This was the message shared _ by organizers of Family Services of the North Shore's mother and daughter brunch May 2 at the Beachside Cafe. “Issues around body image are transferred from mother to daughter,” _—said Diana Cowden, who co-chaired the event with Linda Davies. Family Services has for years organized seminars for mothers and their teenage daughters. This was the first year for a brunch, which was attended by 80 mothers and daughters. Noon and family life educator Teresa Harris spoke at the brunch. “Kids are watching every- thing parents say and do,” said Noon following the presenta- tion. “When they see their moms dieting, hear them coni- ment about size, they really pick up a lot of that,” said Harris. “That’s their introduc- tion to being concerned about _ body image.” The counsellors shared with the group seven tps for “body love”: @ cxamine yourself (and your views about yourself); @ analyze messages; @ fight the body police; §@ be a whole person; @ practise radical self-accep- tance; @ drench yourself in self-kind- ness, and @ turn your spotlight inward — describe three fabulous attributes about who you arc - that have nothing to do with your appearance. Noon and Harris also shared with the group the fol- lowing survey results: @ 80% of women visualize themselves to be one-third larger than they actually are; @ 47% of normal weight women want to be thinner; & 29% of Grade 3 boys (age 8) ids the key te love’ women are in the height and weight range of models.
