Martin. By lan Noble News Reporter With a band playing and Martin's ship Adantic Superior looming at North Vancouver-based Vancouver Drydock behind him, Jim MacFarlan of the anti-govern- ement-cuts Council of Canadians explained the ship had been built in 1982 in Collingwood. Ont.. by Canada Steamship Lines Inc. with a taxpayer subsidy of 9%. In 1986, when Martin was CEO of the company. the ship was dereg- istered in Canada and registered in the Bahamas, where wages for sea- men range from one-quarter to one- third of those for Canadian seamen, MacFarlan said. Manin also moved the registra- tion to escape Canada’s health, environmental und other standards, MacFarlan charges. Now Martin's firm runs its deep sea, operation, CSL International Inc.. which consists of six vessels, out of Boston, MucFarlan said. He claims Murtin has taken advantage of the Canadian subsidy and taken several hundred jobs out of Canada. “So the Canadian economy foses all around.” he said. “The only one who gains is Martin.” “The guy does not deserve 10 be finance minister.” Speaking from Canada Steamship Lines’ Montreal head office, vice president Pierre Presontaine confirmed the ship was built. with a taxpayer subsidy in Collingwood, but would nat have been built in Canada without the subsidy. He said the only way the compa- ny can remain competitiv e jn inter- national shipping is: to operate under a foreigt flag because of the cost of Canadian seamen and the Canadian “gost structure.” He saicf the crew members were likely from India, but would not comment on thelr pay.
