SUNDAY, APRIL 18: Ebony Fashion Fair brings Bill Blass, Bob Mackie and other designer labels to the Andrew McCredie Editor a ndrew@nsnews.com I have stiff memories of my recent visit to Scotland. The breezes. The whiskies. The upper lips. The kilts. All stiff. And wile I fully expeeted the first three, the last one was quite a surprise. Call it my first brush with a kilt. With a name like McCredie and an appearance to match, you'd be right to be a little sur- prised that [ had never donned the tartan wrap. But emigration gave mv par- ems a chance for reinvention, and so there were no cights-and- wheel dancing, Caledonian club nights or bagpipe sounds in the McCredie household (on this last count, Fam thankful). In the mid-’50s, he and my mother went native. And so, narv once did I have an opportunity to wear a kilt (a paintul memory of wearing what my mother passed off as a kilt ar a Canadian scout jamboree in PEI has never, in my mind, counted. To this day I fear that the kilt in question was in fact an older neighbour’s large skirt she wore to the Catholic high schoul down the raad. Pd know that tartan anywhere.) Back to the kilt. Or, in Gaelic: feileadh beg avphilabeg. The history of what we today regard as a kilt is a relatively short one. The great kilt’s design and origin, thought to be in the 17th century, was dictated by the harsh elements of the Highlands. Clansman would wrap) them- selves in the material to keep warm at night while sleeping amongst the heather. To relieve his workers” plight, Rawlinson struck upon the idea of lopping off the shoulder part of the great kilt, and thus the madern kilt was bora. The kilt I wore at my cousin’s wedding was much the same as those worn in the }8th century. Accompanying the kilt was a white collared shirt with bow tic, an Argyle cut jacket, long woolen socks with tartan flashes, & sporran (the furry purse-like thing worn around the waist), and a skean-dhu (a dagger worn in the right sock). When the English were so good as to allow the Scots to once again legally wear their tra- ditional clan clothing following the Act of Proscription of Highland Dress in 1782, kilts were quick to make an appear- See Mens page 17 oa anes Photo Kenneth McCredie NEWS editor Andrew McCredie and cousin Andrew McCredie proudly wear traditiona!
