The Riedlinger family, Allan, Brian and Ruth, proprietors of the well-regarded Lower Lonsdale Sailor Hagar’s neighborhood pub have entered the rarefied ranks of commercial brewing. . Not the flavorless fizz of pan- Canadian ersatz ales,.calorie- reduced lagers, ice beers and other mass-produced brewing gimmicks, but real ales, hearty bitters and crisp lagers. The family proudly unveiled its Sailor Hagar’s Brew Pub on May 25 with a ceremonial chris- _tening from North Vancouver City Mayor Jack Loucks, he of the paternal demeanor and Chicago boxcar haircut. More than a proud day for the Riedlingers, the launch of their brew pub signals yet another local commitment to the glories of beer, one of the world’s most popular but least appreciated fer- mented beverages. . _ Sailor Hagar’s is the Lower Mainland’s only brew pub and - one of only four brew pubs in B.C. It is also North Vancouver's first modern-era brewery and first _ brew pub, though it is not the first of either on the North Shore. The Troller Pub in Horseshoe Bay made national brewing his- tory in 1982 when it opened its Horseshoe Brewery after securing a licence to brew its own ale. The pub’s ownership closed the brewery in September 1987, but it was rescued and resurrect- ed by local brewmaster David Bruce-Thomas, who secured a microbrewery licence for the Horseshoe Bay Brewing Co. in April 1988. -Bruce-Thomas continues to operate his Horseshoe Bay microbrewery in that West Vancouver suburb and now sells his Horseshoe Bay Ale and other select brews to area restaurants and through government liquor stores, Though they are brethren in the honorable fight to preserve real ales, brew pubs and micro- breweries are different brewing beasts. Microbrewies can sell their products where they please, but cannot be affixed to a pub; the . brewing component of a brew pub must be affixed to a pub and cannot sell its brews to any other pubs, though its products can be sold from an affixed beer and _ wine store if the brew pub opera- tors have one. And the -Riedlingers do. They plan to bottle and sell Hagar’s Brewing Co. products _ from their cold beer and wine ‘store starting in July. "But enough malted bureaucra- cy and other licensing mumbo- cee Timothy Renshaw TABLE HOPPING jumbo, Let’s get down to the malted meat and potatoes, which for the Riedlingers and Hagar’s brewmaster Gary Lohin, comes down to the freshness and quality of brew that is delivered! to Hagar's customers in the glass. Lohin, who was lured away from Okanagan Springs to become Hagar’s full-time brew- master, has put together an impressive new beer menu for the neighborhood pub. It includes: fa Hagar’s Honey Pilsner ($2.55 per 9 oz. glass, $3.95 per 16 oz. glass and $7.95 for the 34 oz. Viking serving) a blend of Canadian grains, German hops and European Jager yeast. Bi Scandinavian Lager ($2,.95,$4.45, $9.75), brewed from Canadian Pale, English Carastan and Chocolate and German Munich grains; German and Czechoslovakian hops and European lager yeast. B Narwhal Pale Ale ($2.75, $4.45,$8.95), which adds English Ale yeast and Perle and Willamette hops from Yakima, Washington, to the mix. | Two new brews set to hit Hagar’s pub taps this month are Grizzly Nut Brown Ale and Lohin’s Extra Special Bitter. All are producec! about half a block to the east of the pub in the building that used to house North Shore Auto Electric, but which is now the Riedlinger fam- ily’s pride and joy. Their 10-hectolitre mini-brew- ery is a spotlessly clean assem- blage of stainless steel brewing vats and tanks trimmed in cop- per.
