For the base, | made a yeast
dough and gave each hid a round
layer cake tin to shape their share
of the dough.

Canned spaghetti sauce is a
quick base to spread over the
dough and then they decorated the
top with mushrooms, bacon
(precooked), ground beef (also
precooked), green pepper. pep-
peroni slices, diced hain, onions,
olives —- endless possibilities and
an excellent way to use up bits of
leftover meat.

We prefer jack or Finnish edam
cheese for the top — it gets a bit
stringy but doesn’t go as leathery
as mozzarella. .

YEAST BASE FOR PIZZA

1 Tbsp. active dry yeast
lc. warm water
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
3c. all-purpose flour
2 Tosp. oil

until frothy. Add the salt and then
the flour, very gradually, beating
with an electric mixer until the
dough starts to climb the beaters.

Add the remaining flour with a
spcen and then your hands. Turn
the dough out on a_ clean
countertop and oil the top and
your hands. Turn it over and
knead until smooth — about three
minutes, adding oil as you need to
keep it from sticking.

Put it into a bowl, cover with
plastic wrap and set in a warm
place to rise. It takes about 1%
hours to double.

Cut it into five pieces and press
into non-stick layer-cake tins.
Top as desired and bake in a hot
oven — 425°F about 10 minutes,
rotating the pans until they bake
evenly. You don't have to worry
about watching this — your kids
will sit in front of the oven win-
dow the whole time!

If you really want joy in the
kitchen, let them make their own
banana splits for dessert. The
mess is almost worth it.
