North Shore Indians set to open lacrosse season at recCentre The North Shore Indians opened their 1992 lacrosse season April 17 with an ex- hibition game against the Western Lacrosse Associa- tion’s Vancouver Burrards. The local squad grabbed the at- tention of their big league visitors early as they jumped and in front 3-0 and then matched the Van- couver squad goal for. goal to finish the first period up 6-3. The second period started with the Indians scoring to take a 7-3 lead. The thought of a senior club knocking off one of the major squads got the fans cheering. The next 15° minutes saw the “‘real’’ Burrards show their best as they out-scored and. created a 9-8 lead. A big power-play goal by Chuck Martin and another by rookie Brent Grey rocketed the North Shore Indians back in front with the second period ending 11-9, Third period action kept the fans going as the Burrards scored, then the North Shore Indians scered to push the fans to the edge of their seats. The visitors owned the next six minutes, scor- ing three goals to take a 13-12 lead. They tried to hang on as the North Shore Indians pressed on and, with nine minutes left in the game, got two more goals by Martin that managed to take back the lead, 14-13. The teams ‘kept hammering one another for the final nine minutes and with a two-man advantage, the Burrards scored the equalizer, making the score 14-all. The last four minutes saw both teams miss a couple of breakaways and the North Shore Indians hit two cross-bars and a goalpost. With 44 seconds left, Vancouver scored the goal that put them ahead to stay. The final was Vancouver Bur- rards 15, North Shore Indians 14. Cam Laird stopped 39 shots for the North Shore Indians while Darren Goundrey and Rod Miller made 33 saves for the Burrards. Martin (5 and 1), Wilfred Baker (came out of retirement for 2 and 4) and North Shore’s first-draft- ‘pick rockie Grey (2 and 4) lead the North Shore Indians. Leo Paquin (2 and 5), John Kilbride (3 and 3) and Ted Dowl- ing (4 and 0) paced the Vancouver Burrards* attack. The season opener is May ! at recCentre Lonsdale against Van- couver at 8 p.m., and May 3 in Nanaimo at 6 p.m. Cycle club holding race ON SUNDAY, May 3, the Westview Cycle Club will be hosting the fourth annual St. Mary’s Memorial mountain bike Tace. The race will again consist of two stages (time trial and circuit race), and it will be open to all levels of cyclists. The time trial will start at 10 a.m. at the top of St. Mary’s Read in North Van- couver, The circuit race will feature an up-and-down, twisty, narrow trail in the woods north of Dempsey Road. The sign-in area will be located at the corner of Braemar and Dempsey roads and is open from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on the day of the race. The race fee for BABC-licensed cyclists is $20, and for unlicensed or ‘“‘citizen class’? cyclists, $20 plus $5 for day insurance.
