Prepare for cold weather A -VEHICLE takes an abnormal amount of punishment in severe winter weather, reminds Car Care Canada of the Automotive In- dustries Association of Canada. The most noticeable symptom is slow starting, usually a result of the drastic decrease in a battery’s cranking power. The engine is harder to turn over for another reason: the oil is thicker. Everything, in fact, acts stiff: the heater fan, the shock ab- sorbers and springs, the steering, the transmission, even the brakes. So just because you have the engine warmed up, don’t assume your car is roaring to go. Drive it easy for a few miles in cold weather. The following are other cold weather tips from Car Care Canada: @ Add a little extra anti-freeze solution to your windshield washer reservoir ... not the type you use in the engine, but a con- centrate available at most auto supply stores. In extreme cold, a pint of rubb- ing alcohol added to the wind- shield washer solvent will help prevent freezing. @ Do not use pure anti-freeze. The normal mixture is half water and half ethylene glycol. @ Use extreme caution when spraying starting fluid. A back fire throu:.4 the carburetor or any spark can cause a fire o+ explo- sion. If you must use starting fluid, be sure to have a gocd fire extinguisher nearby. @ Remember the correct way to hook up the jumper cables: red clamps on positive (“thot’’) termi- nals, then one black on the nega- tive (‘‘ground’’) terminal of the good battery. The final connection should be made: to the engine or frame of the disabled vehicle. This prevents a spark from occurring near a battery. If your engine is in tune and your battery is in good shape, you're not likely to need a jump. ‘The Y847 steel belted radial is designed for our stormy Canadian winters.
