By Anna Marie D’Angelo Contributing Writer North Vancouver District 44 School Board (NVS8)_ decided recently to give Balmoral grads a choice of enrolling in Argyle Sec- ondary or Handsworth Secondary, while Sherwood Park grads have a choice of enrolling in Argyle, Handsworth or Balmoral. “We will adjust to the choice if all students want to go (to Argyle,’’ said assistant supevin- tendent Chris Kelly. Kelly also said it was unlikely that all students would choose Argyle. Despite the choices, some French immersion students in sec- ondary grades will be travelling great distances because Sherwood Park is iocated in the east Seymour area, Argyle is located in Lynn Valley, Balmoral is near the Delbrook area and Handsworth is near the northern part of Capilano Road. NOATH VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD More than 40 French immersion parents from throughout the district packed District 44's Nov. 26 meeting which involved the first school board actions stemm- ing from a comprehensive French programs review completed in May. Assigning schools for this year’s graduating classes at Sherwood Park and Balmoral was the mosi urgent of 57 recommendations in the French programs review. The bulk of ithe recommendaticns i volved French immersion riculum and staffing. A 46-name petition from parents with children enrolled at Balmoral or attending clementary feeder schools to Balmoral was presented to counter the school administration’s suggestion t Balmoral's’ French immersion programs should be phased out. A school administration report stated that only two secondary schools (Handsworth and Argyle) were needed for anticipated French immersion enrolment, There are 1,600 French immer- sion students in District 44 this year, unchanged from 1990.
