MAaAILBox U.S. stores don't pay B.C. taxes Dear Editor: Ihave read and was dismayed by Barbara McCreadie’s Nov. 26 col- umn eniitled Bargain Bonanza, U.S.A Perhaps in a future edition she will give your readers a more com- plete list of bargain U.S.A. stores together with a map. Is Barbara McCreadie’s salary paid by the U.S.A. stores she promotes or is it in fact paid by the North Shore merchants that adver- tise in your paper? Do these U.S.A. stores contribute to the benefits that B.C. residents receive as a result of taxes paid by your advertising clients and the B.C. sales tax? Who would scream the loudest if some of our local stores were forc- ed to close due to loss of business to the U.S.A. bargain stores? It would be the Barbara McCreadies. ICBC didn’t take parking away Dear Editor: We would like to clarify some points made in the article North Van residents suggest ways to im- prove local parking problems which was published in your Nov. 15 edition. ICBC did not ‘‘take away’ any parking from the Lonsdale Quay. In the fall of 1984, ICBC and the Lonsdale Quay Market Cor- poration entered an agreement which provided access to our parkade for market patrons at the going rate. When the market opened in 1986, it conducted a promotion to offer ‘‘free parking’’ to its cus- tomers. Patrons had their parkade tickets validated, and the market paid ICBC at a special reduced rate which was in effect through to April of 1988, at which time the promotion ended, Now, the need for parking by ICBC staff and customers fre-. quently fills our parkade during our office hours — there is not the “surpius’’ of space which existed in the past. However, the ICBC parkade remains open to market customers weekday evenings and on weekends. Ken Hardie Manager, Media Relations Public Information Department Who would scream the loudest if denied some of the benefits taken for granted by B.C. citizens? It would be the Barbara McCreadies. It is time you made an opportu- nity for Barbara McCreadie to join the ‘‘real world.’’ D.M. Mitchell West Vancouver Editor's note: Barbara Mc- Creadie’s Nov. 26 Travelwise col- umn took great pains to point out that many. items in the United States are no cheaper than com- parable items in Canada. Travelwise provides travel in- formation. Shopping is a big part of travelling. The column was desizned to give North Shore resi- dents travelling south of the border tips on how they can best separate bargains from non-bargains in the United States. 988-6321 Kenneth J.
