Choose | SINCE 1878, when Sir Joseph Wilson Swan developed the first working incandescent light bulb, incandescent bulbs have been the mainstay of household lighting. Today, however, a whole new light revolution is at hand. “There’s a different type of light source for every conceivable need,’” says Conrad Belanger, lighting consultant. “Tungsten halogen, low-voltage halogen, fluorescent incandescents are terms that may not be familiar to you now, but they will be in the future.”’ Even the old standard incandes- cent bulb has had a face lift. Now they are available in many decora- tive shapes for use with or without a shade. Soft white incandescents cut down on glare; a variety of coated and uncoated reflector bulbs direct light where it is need- ed, and longer-life bulbs have an extended life span one third greater than standard incandescents. Tungsten halogens, also in- candescents, produce a crisp white light (different from the warm light of a standard bulb), for ac- centing that cozy window nook, or spotlighting the family portrait. Halogens last twice as long, pro- viding up to 40 per cent more light than standard incandescents. Low-voltage halogens, which operate in fixtures equipped with a transformer, are often used as ac- cent lighting because of their accu- rate control of light beam and compact size. The fact that halogens are much smaller than the standard pear- shaped bulb, has ushered in a wave of new contemporary fixture designs. They are sleek, spidery, most often in black, silver or white, and available as ceiling fix- tures, torcheres, floor and table lamps. Since halogen bulbs have a special base, they cannot be fitted into fixtures not specifically designed for them.
