June 11 at 12 and 2:30 p.m. Bistro crepes worth a try From page 24 almond with its bright green spinach leaves, sliced mushrooms and slightly piquant cream dress- ing. - The salad was refreshing; the nuts were a nice touch. My main dish was a Ham- Mushroom-Cheese crepe ($5.75) customized with asparagus. The wholewheat crepe was large and came stuffed with thick chunks of ham, sliced mushrooms and sweet, fresh asparagus in a light cheese sauce., It was garnished simply with tomatoes, letttice and two black olives. Overall it was a satisfying entree: there were no disappointments or unpleasant surprises, and its filling was the rich and creamy sort that brings out the best in crepes. | found a Bourguignon crepe ($5.75), which was sampled at an earlier lunch, to be too dry. . A Le Bistro Seafood crepe ($6.95 for a blend of crab, shrimps and cod in a cream sauce) was also judged to be good. But, in my opinion, crepes were originally designed for dessert, where their textures and culinary elegance truly shine. Table Hopping staff tested both Strawberry and Chocolate ($4.95 each) varieties. Le Bistro dessert crepes are the same generous half-plate size as their entree counterparts. Both orders that we tested were served with fillings bolstered by whipped cream and vanilla ice cream, a cumbination that formed a great edible partnership. | And both were delicious — a lively and indulgent feast of creams, crepes and calories. Le Bistro provides a simple din- ing experience that is both easy on digestive tracts and wallets. For crepes, cappuccinos and ca- sual banter, it’s worth a try. North Shore N.S.
