Lightening conditioner’s load lessens energy bill THE LIGHTER your air condi- tioner’s load, the less will be its impact on your energy bill. There are many ways you can make its life easier. Bill Curry, a marketing communications man- ager with a major air conditioning manufacturer, sends along the ex- amples below. © Use your stove’s vent fan — when you cook on top of the range make sure your vent fan is runn- ing. It will exhaust heat directly outside that would otherwise cause more work for your air condi- tioner. © Use your microwave as much as possible —- a microwave oven cooks without heat, and it cooks almost everything. If you have one uet it as often as you can during weather, rather than your 2 and oven. “shese create heat which your air conditioner must handle. © Schedule use of appliances and lighis — these all give off heat. The Jess you use them during the hear of the day, the Jess work your” air conditioner will have to do to keep your home cool. Plan washing, drying and ironing for early morning or evening. Turn lights off when they’re not needed. © Attic vent fan — on hot sunny days heat builds up in your attic at a furious rate. This makes it dif- ficult for your air conditioner to cool living space. An attic fan, blowing the hot air out, can reduce attic temperature as much as 20°C (36°F). In winter you try to prevent heat loss in your home. In summer you want to prevent heat gain. With this in mind, make a tour of your home. You'll probably see all sorts of ways where a little ef- fort can reduce your air condi- tioner’s work load. lawn darts to be banned THE HONORABLE Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada, has announced before the Standing Committee on Consumer and Corporate Affairs and Govern- ment Operations his intention to proceed with a ban on elongated- tip lawn darts. _The Canadian Paediatric Society has, as a result of increased public awareness, recently received reports of several injuries caused by lawn darts since their introduc- tion into Canada. Consumer and Corporate Af- fairs Canada has been monitoring lawn darts closely and had warned Canadians earlier of the dangers of misusing this product. The minister had previously instructed his officials to examine other measures to further ensure public safety, and announced at the Standing Committee his intention to proceed with the ban under the Hazardous Products Act. Regulations to effect this ban will follow as quickly as possible. In the meantime, Consumer and Corporate Affairs will continue to work with industry to minimize the danger. ““While safer models of lawn darts may well be on the market,’’ said the minister, ‘‘I would not like one more summer to pass with the hazards associated with the pointed-tip model still out there.”’ Although not recommended for use by children, lawn darts are Nevertheless a@ summer-time hazard. In this season, consumers are warned against using existing sets of lawn darts carelessly or in the vicinity of children. | ar 17 - Friday, June 16, 1989 - RELAX IN AN ORIGINAL ROPE HAMMOCK e handcrafted ¢ solid, varnished oak stretcher bar e highest quality polyester rope « includes 15” chain and hook for installation sn 229 #1-2900 Smith st. i ‘at oridgeporo Richmond 8.
