4 - Friday, April 7, 1989 - North Shore News LOCATION TO BE DETERMINED Air quality station planned for N. Shore THE GREATER Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) is Ia i currently negotiating with North Vancouver City and Bag District to install a 24-hour air-monitoring station on the North Shore that would provide accurate air quality readings and add the North Shore to the GVRD’s public in- formation air-quality index. By TIM RENSHAW News Reporter Though Greater Vancouver air quality is generally good, with oc- casional fair or poor periods dur- ing fight winds and reduced disper- sion, the area’s index has exceeded 100 twice in the fast five years. On such occasions GVRD Pollution Control staff immediately issue public announcements through the news media and advise local health units in the region. Throughout the area the GVRD operates a network of 40 air monitoring stations. Vancouver City, North Bumaby, Port Moody and Richmond are alf included in the GVRD's air-quality index, which is updated twice daily. Current air quality informatica et hots ae Rs GVRD spokesman Bud Elsie said the $100,000 computerized station should be on the North Shore by the end of the year once an agreement has been reached on a location for the facility. The station would provide accu- rate measurements of such air pollutants as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and ozone. Currenily only particulate mat- ter in North Shore air is monitored. Elsie said there are GVRD air monitoring stations near the First and Second Narrows bridges ‘‘but they are not representative of North Shore air quality.”* The ideal location for the North Shore station, he said, would be on public property removed from heavy traffic areas. Elsie said the GVRD is looking at Mahon Park as the possible site for the facility. As of April 1, the GVRD has in- troduced various improvements to its air-quality program including adding haze caused by fine, dust- like particles to air-quality index measurements. | Because particles can significant- ly reduce visibility the change should result in an index that bet- ter represents periods of visuaily poor air quality.
