6 - Sunday, Juty 24, 1983 - to a different North Shore News IN THE UPCOMING FEDERAL ELECTION Liberaf{ Jeader John Turner, in addition to his other problems, may find Capilano-Howe Sound party supporters marching to a different, slightly discordant drummer. His name would be John Pozer, who’s seeking the Liberal nomina- tion in Tory MP Mary Collins’ constituency and, at this point, fooks like the frontrunner. A suc- cessful business entrepreneur, fam- ily man and West Van resident since 1972, 46-year-old Pozer already enjoys a relatively high profile locally as a result of his community activities — in par- ticular his energetic promotion last year of West Van’s 75th anniver- sary, which included emcec-ing 4 TV auction that raised $26,000 for the celebration kitty. He bills himself as a ‘local boy’’ who “loves people’? and who, as aa MP, would put his community first. It doesn't hurt, either, that he’s lived in Ottawa and Montreal, JOHN POZER ... his own Grit. and is bilingual. The only fly in the ointment for John Turner is John Pozer’s decidedly personal approach to the federal party’s two main platform planks. He thinks free trade (which Turner is fighting tooth and nail) could be a good thing for B.C. and the west. Conversely, he’s far from happy about Meech Lake (which Turner loves) — fearing it will seriously weaken effective federal government. Ironically, both these departures from the official party tine might serve him well in a showdown with Mary Collins. His free trade sym- pathies couid rob her of what promises to be the main Tory clec- tion plank. And in this neck of the woods his doubts regarding Meecli EST Vancouver Mayor Don Lanskail and his six council members should be con- gratulated for having the courage fo admit INSIGHTS march rumnner Lake — the second major Tory plank, with its enshrinement of Quebec as a ‘distinct society’? — echo the confused doubts of many voters about that issue. The nomination meeting is set for mid-October, or whenever the election is called. To date there are two other contenders, sales exec. Newton Hockey of Eagle Harbour and UBC researcher Olga Barrat of North Van, neither exactly a household rare yet. Anything, of course, can happen in politics. But short of Jean Chretien parachuting in, John Pozer — with headaches for his own leader as well as for Mary — looks like the way for Capilano Grits to bet at the mo- ment. ANOTHER SHRINE HONOR for West Van’s Kenneth Smith, clected a trustee for Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children at the interna- tional Shrine convention in New Orleans. He'll now be invoived in administering the $212 million budget for the 22 Shrine hospitals in the U.S., Canads and Mexico. A Shriner since 1963, Ken is Past Potentate of the B.C.-Yukon Gizeh Temple, vice-chairman of the Shrine Football Ciassic Hall of Fame and chairman of the Player Selection Committee. He's presi- dent of Levett Auto Metal, Levett Auto Service and Western Bus Parts & Service, and a director of the Western Canada Motor Coach Association. Once approved, the propossi drew considerable at- tention through Marine Brive demonstrations, media coverage, letters to the editor and general public pro- test — enough to stop any politician dead in his track, but it takes a bigger person to admit error and accept blame when a lynch mob is out for blood. _ Lanskail could have blamed council reporters for overlooking the modest, three-paragraph statement released by the municipality i in May that unfortunately never mentioned the 21-storey height of the proposal; or he could have blamed West Vancouver District staff for its recommendation to proceed with such a development, claiming they didn’t fully investigate traffic impact and resident reaction; or he could have blamed the public for not following the issue since 1981, when the first development guidelines for the site were adopted. But Lanskail took a firm stand, made a public an- nouncement and accepted responsibility for .his ac- tions. In his speech to council Monday evening, Lan- skail said: ‘‘I have always been a believer in the prin- ciple that when vou have made a mistake, the best thing to do is frankly admit it, and get on with the job of correction.” ; Here, here.
