WEST VANCOUVER Smoking banned im seniors centre WEST VANCOUVER Senior Citizens Activity Centre has been declared a non-smoking facility, despite protests from a group of ‘smokey joes’ who do volunteer work there. In future, smokers will have to step outside the seniors recreation centre if they want to indulge in the habit, which has already been banned from the West Vancouver Recreation Centre, Aquatic Centre and Municipal Hall. West Vancouver District Council made the decision Monday, on a motio:. from former smoker, Ald. 2at Boname. “Life without'cigarettes is a new found freedom." Boname told those protesting the move. Boname also said she hoped the recreation centre could find some way of accommodating its smok- ers. At present, the current practice of sinoking in the front lobby has become intolerable to the nurses, front: desk volunteers and others who cannot escape the area. “They turn the air absolutely blue for most of the day,"" said one front desk worker. According to @ written submis- sion from community health nurse Alex Johnston, many clients are also affected by the smoke. The senior citizens rec centre would have been declared smoke free Jast October, along with the other municipal buildings, except for the objections of C. Maynard and a number of other smokers who questioned the manner in which the request for the designa- tion had come through the Seniors* | Hy MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Werner Program Connittec. Council accordingly referred the matter back to the Parks and Rec- reation director, who conducted a survey of the committee's membership. Of the 416 question- naires returned, 63 per cent were in favor of the no-smoking designa- Hion of the centre. “We were surprised that council turned the decision back to us,” said Howard Shillington. Maynard was not impressed with council's decision Monday. “No damn thing ts going to tell me that Pin nor going to sinoke in the seniors recreation centre.” Maynard showed examples of the aids to the handicapped made by him and the other men in his rec centre woodworking group, the Rockinghorse Heys, most of whom smoke. “They want to boot them (the smokers) oul, but not too far. They're needed for their talents and money,’ Maynard said. “Between us and some of the needlepushers (women volunteers) some of the prime movers ure go- ing to be disappearing from the scene if it becomes a smoke-free building,’’ Maynard predicted.
