Design makes a difference

IT HAS been said the little things
make a house a home.

It can also be said the little
things make furniture into home
furnishings.

Decorative details such as
borders, inlays, finials, scrolls,
designs and pediments are the little
touches of creativity that can turn
ordinary furniture into works of
art and give a home its unique
character.

Over the centuries, furniture de-
signers have added various design
flourishes to enhance their work.
Most of the detailing occurs in
more traditionally-styled furniture
with design influences that can be
traced back to the 18th and 19th
centuries.

The detailing can be subtle,
pronounced or even exagge: ated to
crezte different moods.

Eighteenth-century styles are
becoming popular again. Some of
the styles from that period feature
a Ieaf design known as acanthus,
which has been prevalent in fur-
niture design for hundreds of
years.

Most Greek and Roman decora-
tion contains this popular foliage
design, which conveys a graceful
feeling.

The edges of some dressers and
adaptations of china cabinets will
have the Greek key, a decorative
border made up of interlocking
hook-shaped forms. Dentil
moulding is a common decorative
detail of regularly-spaced rectan-
gular blocks that loosely resemble
teeth.

Ments are characterized by their
finial, a widely-used decorative
ornament placed at the end of a
structural feature. The shell carv-
ing is another popular motif that
has its origins in the French
Rococo style.

The design is usually a scallop
shell, found on the front of
drawers and on the cresting tops of
tall chests.
