Travel Olid chef found on Jersey island RIPLEY might want to use this next item in Believe It or Not! Last week’s. column dealt with the island of Jersey and most par- ticularly with a guest house highly tecommended by my daughter, I mentioned that the owner was a marvellous French chef, but { didn’t mention his name. OE a ‘travel™ wise by Barbara McCreadie bY This morning a reader called me. She said that she was from Jersey and that her mother had operated a hotel there for many years. At one point a young Frenchman ar- rived from Normandy and was employed as a chef in the hotel. The chef was highly skilled and incidently taught my caller “everything I know about food.” She raved that this man was responsible for the best meals she ever had, before or since. Eventually, her mother sold the hotel and it was torn down to make room for another. The last my cailer had heard, the chef even- tually opened his own hotel. Although my caller visits Jersey regularly, she had got out of touch with her old friend the chef. A few weeks ago, she and her husband began planning an upcoming visit to Jersey and she mentioned to him that she’d fove to try and find the chef, for oid time’s sake. So, a while later, my article on Jersey caught her eye. A French chef? Operating a guest house? It couldn’t be — or could it? There must be hundreds of guest houses on Jersey, but it’s true — Ashville Guest House is operated by Louis Bougeard — her old friend. The same caller clarified that mystery of the ‘‘std’’ in the tele- phone number of Ashville G.H. — it’s the area code and for anyone wishing .to telephone from here, direct, You would’ dial -011-44- 0534-33075 or 23824... And, she had some nice words of praise for the accuracy of all the columns I’ve done on Jersey — so much so that she’s clipped them and is taking them with her to the editor of the Jersey Weekly Post. I'm very pleased because, as an occasional visitor, it’s easy to make slight mistakes that only a native can pick up on. ase Another reader called about Jersey to tell me that there is one of the world’s most famous orchid gardens there — the Eric Young Foundation in Trinity Village. It’s open to the public and well worth a visit.
