champs crowned

FOUR division champions were
crowned at Norgate Park in the
Gordon Sturtridge Football
League recently.

In the Flag | division (six to
cight vear olds), the West Van
Raiders shut out the West Van
Bears 25-0.

Raiders’ majors were scored by
Jamie Hession, Jeffery Clements,
Chris Evans and quarterback Paul
Glashan.

In Flag II division (nine to 11
year olds) semi-final action, the
first-place West Van Rockets beat
the fourth-place Knights 26-12 and
the third-place West Van Dolphins
upset the second-place Huskies
18-6.

In the final, the Dolphins
prevailed, blanking the Rockets
13-0.

After a scoreless first half, Chris
Bean ran 20 yards for the Rockets’
first major. In the fourth quarter
he threw a 20-yard pass to Kayvon
Besharat for the team’s second
score.

In what was the best game of the
finals, the minor division (11 and
12 year olds) championship, the
Lions beat the Browns 20-7.

After scoring on a safety in the
final quarter, Scott Ackermun ad-
ded a touchdown for the Lions
from close in on a halfback option
play.

. The Browns countered when
quarterback Dave Smith scored on
a 12-yard keeper play.

At the close of the first half
Scott Miller went 60 yards with an
intercepted pass.

Score at the half was 14-7 for
the Lions.

Ackermun closed out the game’s
scoring with a 12-yard left-end
sweep.

In the junior bantam (13-14 year
olds) division final the Chargers
outlasted the Vikings 8-6 in a
penalty-ridden defensive struggle.

Early in the final quarter the
Chargers’ Mark Hutchison scored
on a sweep from the 10-yard line
and then followed up by kicking a
two-point conversion.

In the second quarter, Vikings
halfback Mike Brooks took a pitch
from the quarterback and threw a
perfect 34-yard touchdown pass to
Jim Yourchik.

But the extra point attempt was
blocked and the score at the half
remained 8-6 for the Chargers.

The second-half was a defensive
struggle in- which neither team
mounted any serious scoring threat
and the game ended with the
Chargers hanging on to. their
two-point margin.

NORTH SHORE St. Alice Saints
came from behind recently to pick
up a valuable 2-1 victory over the
Meridian Arms in Metro Soccer
League first division play.

The Saints fell behind carly in
the game when Meridian scored on
a direct frze kick from just outside
the penalty area.

Ed Thomas and Ken Powers
both missed chances to tie up the
game in the first half.

The Saints controlled the game,
but could not create any more

scoring chances until late in the se-
cond half.

With time running out in the
game, Saints sweeper back John
Fisher was moved up to right wing
and his pressure forced a corner
kick.

Lorne Loiselle took the kick and
placed it perfectly onto the head of
Craig Henderson who made no
mistake putting it in the back of
the net.

John Fisher set up the second
goal.
