Stamping out sexual A UNIQUE and important program is taking place in kindergartens throughout the Lower Mainland, thanks to the participation of the Junior League of Vancouver in Green Thumb’s Feeling Yes, Feeling No: A Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Project. Developed jointly by Green Thumb and the Socte- ty for Children and Youth in B.C., Feeling Yes, Feeling No was piloted at Henry Hudson School in Vancouver in 1982, the first program of its kind in Canada. Reaction to the pilot was enthusiastic, and the program (for children from grades one through seven) went to over twenty schools in the city. The Junior League became involved in the project in 1983, and by providing volunteers and financial sup- port forthe project, has en- sured that the Sexual Abuse Prevention Project continues at the kindergarten level. Feeling Yes, Feeling No ts presented in three parts. The first focuses on the difference between ‘‘yes’” and ‘‘no”’ feelings — the difference bet- ween loving hugs and uncom- fortable touches. If children have ‘‘no’’ feelings, they are told to say ‘‘no’’, and tell so- meone they trust. This is rein- forced by the song ‘‘My Body's Nobody's Body But Mine’’, which the children are taught. In the second part, poten- tially dangerous situations are identified, and _ the children are told to speak to someone if they have a pro- blem, even though it might be difficult to discuss. The third segment reinforced the first two with role-playing and theatre; games The @Juntor League pro- vides vblunteers (lO organize, co ordifate and direct meetings With network per SONS school principals, learning assistance teaches, disttict social workers, child care workers and develops and initiates 4 nurses P the project directly to kindergarten classes The hason with the network per sons is apn essential compo nent of the program, and is there to provide Children with as much support as possible The Vancouver Ministry of Human Resources defined sexual abuse as “the sexual exploitation of a child who as not developmentally capable of understanding of resisting the contact of a child cot adolescent who may be psychologically and socrally Wepebhdent on the perpetrator The ostatistues are over abuse whelming. The Judicial Ad- vocates Committee for Children in Seattle, Washington estimated that one in four girls will be sex- ually molested by the age of 18, and that one in ten boys will be molested by the time they reach the same age. The Junior League recognized the need for a prevention program in 1977, developed one for secondary schools, and have continued their work in this area by working with Green Thumb in schools on the kindergarten level. Founded in 1931, the Junior League of Vancouver is an educational and service organization that reaches out to all women interested in voluntarism. The J.L.V. has 200 Active Members and over 300 Sustaining Members, people who have given many thousands of hours to their community to initiating pro- jects where the need is great and where membership in- volvement can be effectively utilized. Past projects include Crisis Centre, Probation Centres, Immigration Resource Cen- tre and many, many more. ‘*Feeling Yes, Feeling No’’ represents the first time the League has worked with Green Thumb. Green Thumb Theatre for Young People was founded in 1974, with the mandate to produce new Canadian plays for children. By 1978, the company became increasing- ly concerned with the issues facing young people today, and since then has developed a national and international reputation for providing thought-provoking and entertaining threatre” for young audiences.
